THE POLITICS OF BIG DATA: FROM SURVEY, TO IDEAL, BACK TO AN INFORMED REALISM

Invited Associate Professor Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa UIC Barcelona, NYIT Associate Professor, Studio-Workshop Summer 2020

The Studio first surveyed Gaudi Sagrada Familia in Barcelona through Big Data gathering and processing, understanding the act of survey as an initiator of the study-design. Understanding reading as a form of design, students surveyed, read, understand and expand upon discoveries of Sagrada Familia. Then the studio worked out latent relationships in the building through Big Data processing using dynamic structural simulation and optimization looking for latent repressed opportunities in the readings of the project. Therefore the studio, related form to structural performance through dynamic interactive computational systems. Students worked with several types of computational simulation, including Big Data survey, VR simulation, and evolutive simulations. The objective of the studio is to compare the original form of the surveyed building to a contemporary means to measure catenary forces, and from this analysis, critique, find problems and expand opportunities to displace, build up and expand upon Gaudi’s strategies.

Workshop final review participants included Alberto Estevez, Tom Verebes, Nelson Montas, Niccolo Cassas, Matias del Campo.
