CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT THE CURRENT STATE OF EXPANSION OF ARCHITECTURE

CONFERENCE The present state of expansion of architecture in relation to index and autonomy; form and structure; the diagram and difference. In relation to the book: Instalaciones: Sobre el Trabajo de Peter Eisenman, Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, DLO/Robles Ediciones After many decades of expansion of the boundaries of architecture, first in relation to the establishment of multidisciplinarity –art, mathematics, geometry or even ecology- and then in relation to the new interfaces –software and media technologies- this conference’s intention is to question the remaining possibility for an architectural autonomy or for any knowledge intrinsic to the discipline, if there is, or if it ever was one. This question is related to formal autonomy and its capacity to organize space, and the effective role of current formalisms to redefine or not the discipline. Form is also measured and therefore mediated as well as striated by the establishment of the diagram as the main mode of contemporary figural-abstraction. Simultaneously, the diagram presents problems in relation to its flexibility for actualization and this seems to be due to its proportionally inverse capacity to produce difference. These issues intend to build up a conceptual frame between the architectural problems that the book in question presents and the academic and professional work of the speakers, and therefore to establish a conceptual, theoretical and academic discussion.

BOOK PRESENTATION Instalaciones: sobre el trabajo de Peter Eisenman, Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, DLO/Robles Ediciones, Buenos Aires 2008. For the first time in Spanish, this comprehensive book develops rigorously all of architect and academic Peter Eisenman’s built architecture installations. Instalaciones was authored and edited by the Argentinean architect Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, a professor at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York City, after collaborating in Eisenman’s studio for several years and designing three of the installations included in this publication. This book is simultaneously a text book and an image book. Its relevance is derived from the fact that it presents important actualizations and unknown aspects of the radical theoretical thinking of Peter Eisenman, who previously collaborated with the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, as he is one of the only architects to have developed a full critical deconstruction of the language of the discipline. Supervised by Eisenman, this book includes previously unpublished material: a synthetic collection of texts of Eisenman’s career, a text by professor Guido Zuliani and many texts by Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa. These texts deal both with histories and theory of architecture and its current relevance, but also critique the current state of expansion of the discipline, developing concepts such as index, diagram, writing, form, folding and spatial warping, but also affect as resistance to the visual and metaphysics of presence. These issues have been dominating the avant-gardes of the last forty years, established new canons and have positioned the work of Eisenman as a main theoretical reference. In opposition to artistic installations, the installations are presented as pure architectural exercises; such is the case, that the book itself critically presents the installations’ spatial ideas parallel to the spatial deep structure of this medium.

CONFERENCIA El estado actual de expansión de la arquitectura: El Índice y autonomía; forma y estructura; diagrama y diferencia. Relacionado al libro: Instalaciones: Sobre el Trabajo de Peter Eisenman, de Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa Esta conferencia intenta acercar a Buenos Aires ciertas discusiones actuales del mundo académico y de las nuevas visiones profesionales de Estados Unidos y de Europa en relación al estado actual de expansión de la arquitectura. Luego de cuatro décadas de expansión de los limites de la arquitectura tanto en relación a otras disciplinas –el arte, las matemáticas o la ecología- como a los nuevos medios –software y tecnologías mediáticas- se plantea si es que existe aún o si es adecuado preguntarse, la posibilidad de una autonomía disciplinar o de un conocimiento únicamente arquitectónico. Esta cuestión está planteada en directa relación a la autonomía de la forma y su capacidad para organizar el espacio, en correspondencia a formalismos que han establecido la ruptura de ciertos limites arquitectónicos en el uso de la geometría diferencial. Por un lado, la forma esta mediada y por ende estriada por el establecimiento del diagrama como principal modo de abstracción-figural contemporáneo. Por otro lado, el diagrama plantea problemas tanto en relación a la flexibilidad de su actualización, como a su inversamente proporcional capacidad de producir diferencia. Estos temas intentan construir un marco conceptual entre los problemas arquitectónicos que presenta el libro Instalaciones: Sobre el Trabajo de Peter Eisenman, de Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa y el trabajo académico y profesional de los disertantes de la conferencia y establecer así una discusión conceptual, teórica y académica.

Instalaciones: sobre el trabajo de Peter Eisenman, Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, DLO/Robles Ediciones, Buenos Aires 2008. Este libro desarrolla intensivamente todas las instalaciones temporarias del arquitecto-académico Peter Eisenman. Por primera vez en español fue editado por el arquitecto argentino Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, profesor de la escuela de arquitectura de Cooper Union en Nueva York, luego de colaborar en el estudio de Eisenman por varios años y diseñar tres de las instalaciones incluidas. Es simultáneamente un libro de texto y un libro de imágenes. Su relevancia se debe a que presenta importantes actualizaciones y aspectos poco conocidos del pensamiento radical teórico de Eisenman, que colaboró con el filósofo francés Jaques Derrida y es uno de los únicos arquitectos que trabajó una verdadera deconstrucción crítica del lenguaje de la disciplina. Supervisado por Eisenman, incluye material inédito: una colección sintética de textos de su carrera, un texto del profesor Guido Zuliani y varios de Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa. Estos textos tratan tanto historias y teoría de la arquitectura y su relevancia actual, como también críticas al estado actual de expansión de la disciplina, desarrollando los conceptos de índice, diagrama, estructura, forma, plegado y arqueado espacial, pero también la afección como resistencia a lo visual y la metafísica de la presencia. Estos temas han dominado las vanguardias de los últimos cuarenta años, establecieron nuevos cánones y colocan al trabajo de Eisenman como principal referente teórico. En contraste con instalaciones artísticas, se presentan como ejercicios puramente arquitectónicos; tanto es así que el libro mismo trata críticamente estas ideas espaciales llevándolas al mismo nivel de estructura profunda de este espacio.
